 About Skånes University Hospital

On 1 January 2010, after an unprecedentedly short period of preparation, Malmö and Lund have one new collective university hospital.

The purpose of the amalgamation of the university hospitals in Malmö and Lund is to enhance the competitiveness of the university hospital  service in a Swedish and an international context, to enhance the scope of clinical research and to enhance the hospital's attractiveness as a workplace. Expressed in simple terms – together we are going to provide even better care. For most patients and employees, most things will remain the same, although there are plenty of questions about the change.

Advanced healthcare, research and education are the three cornerstones that Skånes University Hospital was built on and is Sweden’s third largest University Hospital. As a regional and university hospital it is responsible for providing highly specialised treatment and emergency and trauma treatment for inhabitants of the Region of Skåne, but also for people from the rest of Sweden and other countries.  We consider our patients to be citizens of equal value and we see the meeting with the patient as the moment of truth. Everything we do aims at creating added value for the patient. This is our aim not only for patients of today – through high quality, safety and a positive meeting – but also for patients of tomorrow – through education and research.

Patients saftey

The safety of our patients is a high-priority task for all nursing staff at Skåne University Hospital. Exception reporting, with the accompanying investigation into causes by way of an incident analysis, constitutes a good foundation for patient safety work. Incident analyses are carried out for all serious incidents and for all cases that are reported to Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare in accordance with Lex Maria. The purpose is to detect deficiencies and to remedy them to ensure that no more exceptions occur. Some areas that are being given priority as regards patient safety include reducing the number of care related infections, medication errors as well as pressure sores and falls. The communication between different care providers is also an area for improvement as are actions in the event of life-threatening conditions. In a collaboration involving all county councils and regions, Sweden's municipalities and county councils are also making a national endeavour to promote increased patient safety.

Continually improving care

All employees have two jobs in a modern hospital function: both to provide care, and also to improve their methods of working around the patient. We are developing the care service, by constantly reviewing and improving our work procedures. When we work together and remove inconvenient, time-wasting elements, the stress on our employees reduces at the same time as patient safety increases. This is Lean Healthcare – a business philosophy to which Skåne University Hospital will be adhering.  The Lean philosophy has been in international use within healthcare since the start of this century with very good results and is now spreading increasingly quickly. Lean Healthcare is based on the employees themselves developing their duties as a natural part of their job. Within healthcare it is all about learning about what really benefits the patients, what creates added value. Anything that is not of any benefit should be removed.   Lean Healthcare is based on the following principles:

  • the focus must be on a fast, smooth flow of patients ·
  • building structures to enable the hospital's working group itself to improve its working methods on a continuous basis

Health-promoting hospital

In addition to curing people and providing palliative care, one of our hospital's important duties is to prevent diseases and to promote health. Skåne University Hospital is a non-smoking hospital and a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Health Promoting Hospitals network.
